Will my insurance cover any of this?

Good news and bad news…

There is some limited coverage for acupuncture on some insurance plans, so it is possible that your insurance may cover SOME of your care to help offset your out of pocket costs. That is the good news. The bad news is that insurance coverage for acupuncture is limited to PAIN THERAPY ONLY and they will only ever reimburse for relief care and corrective care phases of treatment. This means that if your issue doesn’t involve pain then acupuncture is considered “experimental” and will be automatically denied (there are few exceptions). And that once you getter better to the point that your symptoms are neither improving or regressing (so you are maintaining your progress) then it is considered maintenance care and that is also not covered as it is deemed “not medically necessary.”

After a decade of billing insurance, we have learned the hard way how difficult and frustrating dealing with it can be. For this reason, we try to educate patients up front to make sure that everyone has realistic expectations going in. It is unlikely that the entirety of your care will be covered by your insurance.
